The CYC Youth Sailing Academy is a training program for young men and women between the ages of 12 and 18 that aims to develop high levels of both sailing and life skills.

The Academy will provide a range of opportunities for young people to participate in the sport of sailing in Canberra and compete interstate, develop leadership qualities, and attain recognition for their achievements.

Introduction:
This year’s Saturday Youth Sailing program at the Canberra Yacht Club is operating under a new 3 level system. This allows instructors to better provide a sailing education aimed at the correct level for the students. These classes will be known as Bronze, Silver and Gold. Throughout the season students may be moved from one class to another so that they are within the correct class for their abilities. The curriculum will be the same for each class, but the techniques and theory will be adapted to suit the class level. If you are unsure which class best suits your child, please contact the Sailing School Office on 6273 4777 for advice.

Bronze: 9.30am to 11.30am
This course is aimed at students who have very little or no sailing experience. It will begin with the basics of sailing and it is hoped that by the end of the program students will be accredited with a Level One Certificate. Students who show an aptitude for sailing, will be moved into the Silver Program.

Silver: 12 noon to 2.30 pm
This course is aimed at students who have some sailing experience. A Level One Certificate is a pre-requisite for this. Students within this group who are showing a higher level of skill may be moved to the Gold Program, while students who are struggling may be moved to the Bronze Program. It is hoped that students who complete this Program will be awarded a Level Two (or higher) certificate.

Gold: 2.30 pm to 5.00 pm
This Program is aimed at students who have significant sailing experience. This may include those who have participated in afternoon sessions of previous Saturday courses or who hold a Level 2 Certificate. This program is aimed at being a feeder for the Optimist or Youth Racing Squads. Students whose skills are not at a high enough standard will be moved into the Silver Program. The Gold program will involve advanced manoeuvres and be more structured around the skills required for racing.
